Life of Pi Analysis
Summary Piscine Molitor Patel ââ¬â Protagonist in the story, also the narrator ââ¬â also known as Pi Ravi Patel ââ¬â Piââ¬â¢s older brother by three years Santosh Patel ââ¬â Piââ¬â¢s father, owns a zoo in Pondicherry, India Gita Patel ââ¬â Piââ¬â¢s Mother Satish Kumar ââ¬â Piââ¬â¢s biology teacher in Pondicherry Father Martin ââ¬â A catholic priest that introduces Pi to the catholic faith Satish Kumar ââ¬â A Muslim mystic that shares the same name with Piââ¬â¢s biology teacher Hindu Pandit ââ¬â A man whom is never named, he becomes very angry at Pi for practicing religions other than his own Pi Patel, a Hindu boy from Pondicherry, India, narrates this novel. The novel begins with Pi going into great depth about the life of a sloth, which reminds him of a god. Pi explains how he got his name ââ¬â from a swimming pool. This leads into Piââ¬â¢s life story, which begins with his fond memories of his fatherââ¬â¢s zoo in India. Fo llowing this is a memory of a trip he took with his family, where he meets a catholic priest who introduces him to Catholicism. Later on this trip, Pi meets a Muslim mystic who introduces Pi to the Muslim faith.Pi is deeply intrigued with other religions and their practices, but his curiosity crushed when a Hindu Pandit informs Piââ¬â¢s parents that he is practicing other religions than his own. Significant Quotes ââ¬Å"I know zoos are no longer in peopleââ¬â¢s good graces. Religion faces the same problem. Certain illusions about freedom plague them both. â⬠Page 21 This quote shows how closely related Pi sees animals and religion.People misunderstand the life of animals in the wild; they do not understand that life in captivity at a zoo might very well be a better life for an animal ââ¬â just as people misunderstand what it means for someone to be free of a religion. Religion can take away the harshness of reality, just as the walls of a zoo enclosure can show one r eality, but not the one beyond the walls. Pi is trying to show how religion can make a life simpler and more enjoyable. ââ¬Å"I can well imagine an atheistââ¬â¢s last words: ââ¬Å"White, white! L-L-Love! My God! â⬠ââ¬âand the deathbed leap of faith.Whereas the agnostic, if he stays true to his reasonable self, if he stays beholden to dry, yeastless factuality, might try to explain the warm light bathing him by saying, ââ¬Å"Possibly a f-f-failing oxygenation of the b-b-brain,â⬠and, to the very end, lack imagination n and miss the better story. â⬠Page 70 This quote illustrates how closely religion is linked to creativity and imagination. How an atheist believes in the nonexistence of god, still believes in something and has the capacity to change their beliefs, where as an agnostics are uncertain, with no beliefs and therefore lacking imagination to devise a guide for their life.Without stories of beliefs in our lives -like in an agnostics life ââ¬â lif e is ââ¬Ëdry ââ¬Ë and ââ¬Ëyeastlessââ¬â¢ or flat and dull. ââ¬Å"I couldnââ¬â¢t get Him out of my head. Still canââ¬â¢t. I spent three solid days thinking about Him. The more He bothered me, the less I could forget Him. And the more I learned about Him, the less I wanted to leave Him. â⬠Page 63 This quote shows the depth of Piââ¬â¢s faith at such a young age. He seeks God not only through his own religion, but also in religions that he adopts throughout his journeys. Piââ¬â¢s goal is to love God ââ¬â innocent but extremely powerful.

Do Companies Have a Responsibility Not to Destroy the Environment or Should Profits Be Allowed at Any Environmental Cost Essay
We can see a change in every organizational activities, as in marketing, for example Mc Donald change their previous red logo, in green one, A new one, for a new eco-system protecting plan. In this research we are going to see many element, which will prove that companies have a responsibility to take care about the environment. In this research, a melting pot of arguments will be show, to understand if businesses and factories have to pollute instead of adapting their way to work in function of environment and sustainable development. Real fact will help to understand the point of view. Firmââ¬â¢s activities have big environmental impact, its take a major part of naturals resources and reject in the environment. Oil and chemicals industries are not the only companies, which polluted. Every single firm consumes raw material as water, energy and others. Itââ¬â¢s also rejected some substances more or less harmful in the environment. More over the intensive consumption of raw material have big impact on the extinction many species, or animal can become endangered. Deforestation in some country appears because companies want to produce more and more, always more. If firms continue to take resources as now, there will be an exhaustion of raw material as oil and gas. Climate change is partly caused by every reject by firms, in terms of polluting gas, chemical stuff and pollution in the see. As ââ¬Å"good planetâ⬠said in their article, a cellulose factory has been closed by the government because they notice that to much pollution as been providing by this factory. In fact, around this factory the Baikal lac was very pollute. The vice Prime Minister Arkadi Dvokovitch announces that the factory will be close as soon as possible: ââ¬Å"We decided to close the plant cellulose Baikalskâ⬠. As the government said, a care project is taking part in this area of Russia. The fact that firms do not respect the environment can be dangerous in different way. In this case, 1700 peoples became unemployed, because it shutting. Population becomes less and less happy because of the different ways of pollution of the country. That is why everyone losing something: government loses reputation, to let factories pollute in the country. Firms have to be shutdown because its disrespect the environment. The reputation is very important for a company; it is one of the most important things to maximize profit. Peopleââ¬â¢s way to speak about a company makes it stronger, if its have a good reputation. More often companies can have a bad rap; When it is important to see what are peoples problems and what are the environmental problems, company are less fascinate. Furthermore, it is usually the bigger business, which pollute the most. It is possible to make profit, and make a maximizing profit not in spit of polluting. But head directors prefer giving money to government as fines, instead of polluting less and earn less money. Refers to the case of Pfizer industry, which is one of the biggest pharmaceutical firms from France. As Bschool wrote in an article, Pfizer has the most important record of polluting action in all categories: ââ¬Å"Pfizer has a bad record on numerous frontsâ⬠. This big company has been fined many times by authorities, for environmental violations, in terms of air contamination, because rejected lots of hazardous chemicals into the atmosphere. After many recommendations by government, Pfizer industry did not take care about it, and preferred continued to earned money and maximizing profit. This unconscious act proves that head manager who where at the top of the firm did not think about environmental and social problem, and did not feel concerned by security. According again to Bschool, In 2009, the company became more open minded and aware of what she did, and try to reconsolidated the public opinion with an offer to charity: ââ¬Å"In 2009, Pfizer gave more than $60 million to charity, amounting to an astounding 24,2% of its total net profits for the year. â⬠Thanks to regulation and authority to act in this different case, because we all know that is not the only to act in this way with people and environment. Nowadays, people become more and more involved about the protection of the environment. People, company and government try to find together some alternative to stay on the road in term of ecology. At the begging of the XIX century, the industrial revolution and the economy are based on the absolute search of gain. It is difficult to get back and primary think to the development instead of maximizing profit. Therefore company and government had to make some agreement for sustainable development. For example, according to Jonathan Maxwell, SDCLââ¬â¢s CEO: ââ¬Å"Reducing demand for energy is potentially the most cost- effective and rational way of reducing emissions and improving the security of energy supply. The UK regulator, Ofgem, recently predicted in its first annual Electricity Capacity Assessment that the amount of spare capacity in the system could fall from 14% to 4% in the next 3 years, raising the specter of outages and price rises. This ground-breaking agreement between SDCL, Kingspan and Johnson Controls represents a major step forward towards a scalable and replicable solution, funded through energy savings achievedâ⬠. This kind of action is present nationally and internationally. Government want to reduce a lot Co2e emissions in the world; that is why big action concentrate many countries all around the world. States have to sign a convention, and adopt comportment after that. The majority of restriction are involved by the OMC (World Trade Organization). Refers to the professor Michael Porter, teacher in Harvard Business School, the ââ¬Å"Porter hypothesisâ⬠(citation). Supporting his thesis from 1991, the main idea of environmental regulation is to institute programs firms reducing some externalities. Mr. Porter said also if companies are doing it by themselves it is considerably normal that businessââ¬â¢s profits, by definition necessarily decrease. So the profit of factory can decrease if companies are adopting new rules for sustainable development. In different case, it is better making profit than take care about the environment and sustainable development. The first of a company is to make profit, and more precisely a maximization of profit. A lot of Head business managers prefer pollute and make profit, rather than adopts rules for ecology, and change the global way of the firm. A survey on the green economy post show that around 34% of executives polled preferred to stay on a good move with their company and prefer see the whole economy of the business on prosperity: ââ¬Å"According to this Survey, 34% of executives polled said that their firmââ¬â¢s immediate financial goals were of more importance than practicing sustainabilityà à ». There are lots of problems in changing methods to produce for a company, the management of the polluting rubbish, change machine that will be less dangerous for the environment. So that is why manager do not care about nature and public opinion. Even if there are many inconvenient, it is possible to see company which was able to accept this change in term of environment protection. As we see in the introduction, Mc Donald changes many things in the company. For example the logo, to be in coherence with sustainable development, the logo was red and now its green, the environment color. After that, it is not only a picture of a good company, which wants to have a good behavior with environment; there are some benefits that Mc Donald can catch benefits. Referring to Bob Langert, who is VP, Corporate social responsibility at Mc Donaldââ¬â¢s corporation: ââ¬Å"Energy is really our No. issue,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"When you look at the dollars we spend, and the impact we have on the environment, and the progress we can make to do better, and use our size and influence to make a difference, itââ¬â¢s energy. â⬠Bob Langert tell us this information in an interview, in a US TV channel called alternative channel To conclude , we saw different aspect from making profit instead of taking care about the environment. Along this research it is prove that it is better to contribute to sustainable development and be aware of consequences of pollution. Even if it is hard to renounce to earn lots of money and make a maximize profit for business. Help nature and it will reward you. Is Walmart Cheating Customers Out of Cash Back
Online rumors circulating since November 2004 claim cashiers at Walmart and other retail stores routinely steal money from customers by surreptitiously triggering the cash back option during credit or debit card transactions. This accusation is unsubstantiated. Walmart Cash Back Scam: Analysis For a scam so allegedly widespread and easy to pull off, theres precious little in the way of evidence to prove that it often occurs, if ever. A search of newspaper archives going back 20 years retrieved only one confirmed crime report even vaguely resembling this issue, and in that case a grocery clerk was caught double-charging customers who verbally requested cash back at a Solebury, Pennsylvania supermarket in 2007. A November 24, 2009 article in the Des Moines Register cited an anecdotal report of a fraudulent cash back transaction at a Des Moines retail store, but the details were sketchy and its unclear whether the incident actually amounted to an attempted crime or was merely a cashier error. The Technology of Cash Back Point-of-Sale systems are more sophisticated than they once were, making it all but impossible for unscrupulous cashiers to put through cash-back transactions without the customers knowledge. In most modern retail stores, including Walmart, customers swipe their own debit or credit cards and must personally initiate and confirm cash-back requests using the same device. The crime could conceivably occur at check-out stands where the clerk swipes the customers card and enters cash-back requests manually, but these circumstances are becoming more rare. These alerts, however, do offer one good bit of advice: Examine your receipts before leaving any commercial establishment theres no mistake or fishy charge. Sample Emails About Walmart Scam Heres sample email text contributed by S. Smith on Aug. 3, 2009: FW: Pay attention to your receiptsPay attention and look at your WALMART receipts...any receipts when you use ANY debit card or credit cardTHIS IS TRUE! It happened to me at Wal-Mart (Supercenter Store #1279, 10411 N Freeway 45, Houston , TX 77037 ) a month ago.I bought a bunch of stuff, over $150, and I glanced at my receipt as the cashier was handing me the bags. I saw a cash-back of $40. I told her I didnt request a cash back and to delete it. She said Id have to take the $40 because she couldnt delete it. I told her to call a supervisor. The supervisor came and and said Id have to take it. I said NO! Taking the $40 would be a cash advance against my Discover and I wasnt paying interest on a cash advance!!!!! If they couldnt delete it then they would have to delete the whole order. So the supervisor had the cashier delete the whole order and re-scan everything! The second time I looked at the electronic pad before I signed and a cash-back of $20 popped up. At that point I told the cashier and she deleted it. The total came out right. The cashier agreed that the electronic pad must be defective. Obviously the cashier knew the electronic pad was defective because she NEVER offered me the $40 at the beginning. Can you imagine how many people went through before me and at the end of her shift how much money she pocketed?Just to alert everyone. My co worker went to Milford, DE Walmart last week. She had her items rung up by the cashier. The cashier hurried her along and didnt give her a receipt. She asked the cashier for a receipt and the cashier was annoyed and gave it to her. My co worker didnt look at her receipt until later that night. The receipt showed that she asked for $20 cash back. SHE DID NOT ASK FOR CASH BACK. My co worker called Walmart who investigated but could not see the cashier pocket the money. She then called her niece who works for the bank and her niece told her this. There is a scam going on. The cashier will ask for cash back and han d it to her friend who is the next person in line. Please, Please, check your receipts right away when using debit cards. The store has the cashier under investigation now. We can only pray that she is caught very soon.I am adding to this. My husband and I were in WalMart North Salisbury and paying with credit card when my husband went to sign the credit card signer he just happen to notice there was a $20 cash back added. He told the cashier that he did not ask nor want cash back and she said this machine has been messing up and she canceled it. We really didnt think anything of it until we read this email. Please be aware. Heres an additional sample email about the purported scam l contributed by Ells on June 15, 2006 Fw: WALMARTI have actually seen this one...DONT KNOW HOW THE CASHIER GOT THE CASH BACK WITH OUT ME USING MY PIN NUMBER BUT SHE DID!Subject: Wal MartA few weeks ago I got an e-mail about a scam that the cashiers at Wal Mart are pulling... you use your debit card w/o requesting cash back and the cashier does something on her/his machine that requests cash back and then puts your cash in their pocket... Well, it just happened to me at the Wal Mart on Rte. 40... I know darn well I hit no for cash back, watched the touch screen light up for NO cash back...but had I looked away I wouldnt have seen the next screen light up for $80 cash back.I looked at it and said, $80 cash back!! I hit NO...the cashier says, There must be something wrong with the machine b/c youre the 2nd person that happened to; the $80 button must be right above the word No.No, its not...the No button is at the very bottom of the screen, nowhere near the dollar amounts for cash back... I just said, GIVE ME MY $80!! GIVE- ME-MY-$80!! so she goes back in the drawer for it... I was heated...but I always look at my receipt, I dont always watch the screen. But had I walked away and went back she may have tried to argue with me... Nevertheless, the e-mail is true...they are trying to cheat you when you use your debit card and since I know we all at SSA frequent that Walmart, I wanted to let you know its happening up there. The Compatibility of Aristophanes Speech with Socrates Ideas
When people speak about the sense of life many of them agree that the life is meaningful only when it is based on the principles of love. Thus, love is often considered as the leading aspect of the peopleââ¬â¢s life and as its ruling force. Many philosophers spent a lot of time discussing the phenomenon of love in order to understand the peculiarities of this feeling and to examine its mysterious nature.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Compatibility of Aristophanesââ¬â¢ Speech with Socratesââ¬â¢ Ideas specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More From this point, Platoââ¬â¢s Symposium can be considered as the most interesting representation of the ancient philosophersââ¬â¢ thought and their visions of love. Why do people usually have an irresistible desire to seek for love? What feelings and emotions lead them in their searches? In his speech, Aristophanes tried to answer these controversial questions with presenting a myth about the peopleââ¬â¢s nature which could explain that human desire. According to this myth, people who earlier were complete and had two faces and limbs were divided into two halves by the gods. That is why, to feel completeness in the life, people need to find their halves. The discussion of the myth presented in Aristophanesââ¬â¢ speech is compatible with Socratesââ¬â¢ visions of the issue of love because both philosophers consider love as a desire of something or a lack of an important part for people to be complete, love is also the search of the best part or the ââ¬Å"goodnessâ⬠, and the philosophers agree that love is intentional in its nature. The nature of love is one of the most provocative questions in philosophy which can have a lot of answers according to the positions which are close to this or that philosopher. Nevertheless, there is one point considered as exceptionally significant for the discussion by almost all the thinkers. The sp eeches of Aristophanes and Socrates focus on the fact that love is the realization of the definite intention. Thus, love is intentional in its character. According to Aristophanes, the ruling force of the peopleââ¬â¢s life is the search for something or the search for love which can be explained as the natural intention of a human to find his half in order to feel himself as a whole. Moreover, this necessity depends on the peopleââ¬â¢s instincts which are typical for the human nature and affected by their origin. That is why it is almost impossible to resist to the desire or intention to feel the wholeness with another human. In his speech, Aristophanes states that ââ¬Å"Love does the best that can be done for the time being: he draws us towards what belongs to usâ⬠(Plato 36.193d). When people know that they are incomplete they suffer from this knowledge and do not feel satisfaction.Advertising Looking for essay on philosophy? Let's see if we can help you! Socrates also discusses love as an intention because this feeling has the object toward which it is directed (Plato 42.200e). People are searching not for the abstract thing, but for the real object of their feeling because this object should complete their nature. That is why people suffer when the object of their love does not belong to them. The notion of love as the intention is similar in the philosophersââ¬â¢ discussion to the vision of love as a need or as a desire. Following Aristophanesââ¬â¢ considerations, it is important to note that people try to find the object of love or their half because this desire is explained by the peculiarities of the humansââ¬â¢ origin. Therefore, the feeling of love is the representation of the lack of the necessary part of a human, and it is the pe opleââ¬â¢s intense want to acquire their wholeness. According to Aristophanes, ââ¬Å"Loveâ⬠is the name for our pursuit of wholeness, for our desire to be completeâ⬠(Plato 29.192e). People cannot be happy when they are incomplete. If Aristophanesââ¬â¢ explanation of the peopleââ¬â¢s lack of the other person as a half is based on the myth about males, females, and androgynies, Socratesââ¬â¢ idea about love as a longing depends on the opinion that love is always the desire of something. During his conversation with Agathon, Socrates draws his opponentââ¬â¢s attention to this fact asking him a series of questions starting with ââ¬Å"Is Love the love of nothing or of something?â⬠(Plato 41.199e). Agathon says that love can always be considered as the love of something. In spite of the fact this understanding of love is more general in comparison with Aristophanesââ¬â¢ ideas of love, Socratesââ¬â¢ vision is compatible to Aristophanesââ¬â¢ discuss ion of love because love of something as the desire of something depends on the fact that person wants something when these objects do not belong to him or her. That is why love of something is the lack of something. This lack makes people consider themselves as incomplete persons. However, is any half which was acquired during the personââ¬â¢s search can be discussed as appropriate to form the whole? Aristophanes pays attention to the fact that people can be satisfied only when they find their necessary halves which are ideal for them.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Compatibility of Aristophanesââ¬â¢ Speech with Socratesââ¬â¢ Ideas specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More He states that when a man or a woman meets his half ââ¬Å"something wonderful happens: the two are stuck from their senses by love, by a sense of belonging to one another, and by desire, and they donââ¬â¢t want to be separated from o ne another, not even for a momentâ⬠(Plato 28.192c). That is why it is possible to say that people love those objects and those people who are perfect particularly for them. In dialogues with Socrates, Diotima expands this idea presented by Aristophanes and makes it be more general. Diotima states that people are inclined to seek not only for their best halves but also for any perfectness and goodness (Plato 44.201a). The good people or things make people happy. Nevertheless, what are the similarities of Aristophanes and Socratesââ¬â¢ visions of the issue? To answer the question, it is important to concentrate on the details of the discussions. What are the main reasons for people to love something or someone? Thus, those people separated from one another by the will of the gods who are presented in the myth by Aristophanes are seeking for their halves not according to their appearances, but according to the similarities of their souls. Moreover, people love each other not b ecause of some qualities, but because of the feeling of closeness with this or that person. This idea is accentuated in Socratesââ¬â¢ dialogues where it is stated that ââ¬Å"the beauty of peopleââ¬â¢s souls is more valuable than the beauty of their bodiesâ⬠(Plato 58.209e). Thus, people love each other because they understand the value of the personââ¬â¢s soul which is similar to their ones. That is why people are inclined to love the best souls and the best things, but they are the best for these persons particularly and cannot fit the other personsââ¬â¢ souls. Furthermore, Aristophanes focuses on the fact that when people find their halves they are so happy and they feel that they cannot be apart with their lovers anymore. This viewpoint is similar to Socratesââ¬â¢ one. ââ¬Å"Love is wanting to possess the good foreverâ⬠(Plato 52.206d). To complete their nature, people should not only find their halves or the best objects of their love, but also possess them during all their life to preserve the wholeness and happiness. Platoââ¬â¢s Symposium includes a lot of exciting ideas on the problem of love presented in the form of the speeches developed by the ancient philosophers and historical personalities. In spite of the fact that the viewpoints performed in Aristophanesââ¬â¢ speech are often considered as opposite ones to Socratesââ¬â¢ visions of the phenomenon of love, there are a lot of similarities in the discussions of the question which allow speaking about the definite compatibility of the speeches.Advertising Looking for essay on philosophy? This irresistible desire is often caused by the personââ¬â¢s need or lack. Moreover, it is important for a person to love a man or a woman which is similar to him. That is why people are inclined to seek not for any object of love or any half, but for the best one which will be ideal for them. Works Cited Plato. Symposium. USA: Hackett, 1989. Print.
